Generator Technician work on data center projects

A hyperscale campus can host dozens of standby generators — each a locomotive-scale diesel or gas engine that must start and take load within seconds of a utility failure. Generator technicians commission new units, run monthly and annual load tests, maintain fuel systems and transfer switches, and diagnose everything from injector faults to control-logic issues. Uptime commitments make this one of the most consequential technician roles on site.

Diesel technicians from heavy-truck, marine, rail, or military backgrounds transition well, and OEM training (Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU, Kohler) is a strong credential. Field-service roles cover regional fleets and travel between sites, while operator-side roles are stationary and shift-based — both paths are hiring steadily as generator fleets grow with every new campus.
