HVAC Technician work on data center projects
Every kilowatt a server consumes becomes heat that has to be removed, making cooling a core data center system. HVAC technicians install and service chillers, cooling towers, CRAC/CRAH units, pumps, and increasingly the coolant distribution units behind liquid-cooled AI halls. Construction roles focus on equipment setting, piping tie-ins, and startup; operations roles focus on preventive maintenance and keeping server inlet temperatures inside tight tolerances around the clock.
Federal EPA Section 608 certification applies when a technician maintains, services, repairs, or disposes of equipment that could release regulated refrigerants; it is not a blanket credential for every cooling role. State or local HVAC licensing and employer requirements are separate. Experience with large-tonnage chilled-water plants, building automation, or critical-environment maintenance can strengthen a resume, while direct-to-chip liquid cooling is creating demand for technicians comfortable with airside systems and process-style cooling loops.
Licensing and training context: Requirements vary by state, employer, project, and job level. Verify the job posting and the relevant state licensing or apprenticeship authority. Compare reviewed training paths and trade careers.
